The history of the farm

In 1996, Mr. Ravindra Sahu, a computer engineer with a passion for innovation, embarked on a remarkable journey to transform his 36-acre ancestral barren land into a thriving farm. Merging traditional farming methods with modern technology, he set out to create a sustainable ecosystem reviving the farm. Through trial and error, he developed custom-designed implements and technical systems that reduced labor dependency and boosted efficiency. A man of many talents, he manages all the technical aspects of the farm.

In 2010, Mrs. Sujita Sahu joined him, bringing her expertise in time management and staff handling to the table. She pioneered the production of organic fertilizers, insecticides, and sprays using natural materials and traditional methods. Together, the couple's tireless efforts, patience and consistency breathed life into the farm, laying the foundation for Maazi Maati.

Their daughter Ninni, a filmmaker and designer, joined the family in 2020, infusing her creativity and love for nature into the project. Inspired from her Krishnamurti Foundation schooling and N.I.D. education, she conceptualised Maazi Maati as a harmonious blend of nature, design and community. The family shifted to live off-grid at their farm, embarking on a journey to spread awareness about farms, farmers & environment conservation.

The seed of Maazi Maati was sowed with the intention of reconnecting with nature.

Organic from the core

The organic farm is nurtured with care using natural fertilizers, insecticides, soil conditioners and manure. To prevent soil erosion and manage water logging, the farms are meticulously levelled into step farms, complemented by natural bunding and wind breakers planted on the boundary. Drip irrigation ensures efficient water consumption, while custom designed implements ensure better precision in work.

By embracing organic farming, we maintain healthy soil conditions that attract beneficial microbes, natural pollinators and a diverse array of species that maintains the ecological balance of the farm that results in delicious & nutritious harvest.

NIMBODI ARK - made from neem leaves and seeds that repels insects and pests.
DASHPARNIYA - a blend of 10 plants & herbs that is a strong insecticide.
GAU MUTRA ARK - A insecticide spray made from cow urine that has anti bacterial & anti microbial properties.
JEEVAMRUT - A blend of cow dung, cow urine, jaggery and flour that is beneficial for the soil microbes.
BESHARAM ARK - Made from citrus plants and Besharam plant, this blend is a powerful insecticide.

The making of Maazi Maati

Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Maazi Maati, where nature's essence is woven into every aspect of the design. Eco-friendly constructions feature natural materials like terracotta roof tiles, mud-plastered walls, exposed brickwork, bamboo & wooden structures. Repurposed recycled materials from demolished structures like steel, bricks & stones at the farm minimised carbon footprint.

The terracotta roof tiles keep the atmosphere naturally cool, while the play area's bamboo and teakwood design maintains the terrain's raw & playful charm. Even the washrooms are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring airy & sky-lit spaces that reduce electricity consumption during the day. Soak pits near the washrooms percolate and restore groundwater and the swimming pool's water is recycled for irrigation purposes.

Most of the structures are designed in-house and hand build. With the passion for sustainability and harmonising with nature moulded Maazi Maati.
